That screenshot above is from HRDive article about “wage stagnation ruining hopes for the future,” and while HRDive (or anything HR “thought leadership”) is a little doomer-y, that general sentiment is true, and it’s easy to see how “concerns about money” are playing into “the fertility rate.” It’s also relatively easy to blame all of this on “capitalism,” but doing so is what we call a reification error, or when you blame a concrete thing (“Man, I am broke”) on an abstract concept (“capitalism”). I call “capitalism” an “abstract concept” there because it’s experienced in so many ways by so many different people that there is not really one singular idea or definition for it.
