About a year ago, I was having breakfast at some country club with a dude in my workout group. I wasn’t sure of the purpose of this breakfast, per se, but it was his treat — I ain’t no country club guy, generally — so I took it and we just bullshitted about life. It wasn’t half-bad. The funniest part of the conversation was, we were talking about marriage and all that. I asked him something like, “Does your wife work?” And he laughs, and says: “Good Lord, no.” I’m not entirely sure what this dude does — I think he helps private companies get sold, maybe? — but he has a nice house in the “right” neighborhood and belongs to a country club. All the conventional success trappings are in place.
As for the wife not working, that’s apparently pretty common among that set.
