Written about “trad-wives” a few times now. That’s surprising to me but also not really. I think about a lot of stuff, and I’ve thought more and more about gender “roles” since infertility became a factor in my life, i.e. what is a man and all that. I guess trad-wives are an extension of that. Funnily enough, sometimes I say “trad” in conversation to describe this, and “trad” rhymes with “Chad,” which is probably the name of the husband in 12% of these situations. Trad and Chad. Nice.

“Trad” in this case means “traditional,” so you stay at home and “raise the kids + keep the house,” as opposed to any out-of-home job or whatever. This is within the lines and wheelhouse of what Harrison Butker got in trouble for a few months ago.

One thing you need to understand about the “trad-wife” movement online is that a lot of times, it’s women who maybe are single signaling to affluent men that “Yes, I would do whatever you asked.” There is a big overlap between guys who watch Rogan religiously + guys who believed some of Alex Jones’ stuff and guys who watch trad-wife content. Big overlap; not discussed as much as it should be.

Tradwives are an economic reality, but a decreasing one, because if you’re trying to hit replacement rate and thus have three kids + a wife that doesn’t work, that’s five mouths to feed counting yourself. Unless you have passive income + investments + family money, five mouths in a time when automation is coming for white-collar work is harder than we think. A lot of doctors and lawyers I know stopped at two kids, from exhaustion + economic fatigue. Just saying.
